Hypervisor and virtualization

Hypervisor technology allows multiple operating systems to run
on a single multi-core processor. It's even possible to combine
standard operating systems such as Windows and Linux with
real-time operating systems. The hypervisor is a layer of
software between the PC hardware and the operating systems,
which run concurrently and independently of one another.

Intel® technology inside

The 3rd generation Core i-series provides multi-core processors with an integrated graphics unit. In addition to the graphics, the processors contain the cores, the memory controller and cache memory. The memory controller supports DDR3 RAM, with a clock rate that has increased to 1600 MHz to provide faster data exchange between the processor and the DRAM.
Hyper-Threading
Hyper-Threading Technology from Intel® enables each core to process two tasks simultaneously.This optimizes processor utilization and boosts the performance of the system as a whole.

When running resource intensive applications, this also ensures that there is plenty of computing power left over for programs running simultaneously.
Turbo Boost
When the situation calls for it, the processor automatically shifts into high gear with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology. This automatically increases the processor frequency beyond the base operating frequency when the workload demands additional performance. The operating system can request activation of the Turbo Boost Technology as long as the cores are operating within specified power, current and internal temperature limits.

Intel® has reduced the size of the chip to an impressive 22 nanometers. A new micro architecture with the graphics unit integrated directly in the CPU provides a considerable leap in performance compared to the 2nd generation Core™ i-series, not to mention compared to the Core™ 2 Duo. Core™ i3, Core™ i5 and Core™ i7 CPUs with up to four cores represent the maximum performance currently available on the industrial PC market.

High-performance

The rest of the PC infrastructure has also been streamlined for maximum computing performance and optimal data throughput. The Automation PC 910 now has a serial ATA-based CFast card in place of the previously used CompactFlash. CFast cards combine the form factor of a CompactFlash card with the fast SATA interface. The CFast cards retain all the advantages of CompactFlash, such as its extreme robustness.

Multi-core

Since introduction of the Core™ Duo processors, the multi-core approach has been the foundation for

continued development of CPU technology. Once single-core processors reached their physical limits, it was no longer possible to increase performance without considerably increasing power consumption. Multi-core technology resolved this conflict of interest, allowing greater performance to come hand-in-hand with more efficient use of energy. The 3rd generation Core™ i-series used in the Automation PC 910 includes a rich selection of high-performance dual-core and quad-core processors. This includes several low-power versions that allow the Automation PC 910 to be operated fan-free, even with a Core™ i7.

The front side of the Panel PC 900 is a premium quality projected capacitive touch screen.The seamless, anti-glare glass surface and brilliant highresolution display represent the ultimate in state-of-the-art operator panel technology. The slim profile is more than just an indication of the highquality engineering: it also makes them a perfect fit for any machine. The new series is available with mounting options for a control cabinet cutout or a support arm. The displays are equipped with long-lasting, power-saving LED backlighting. Multi-touch panels Multi-touch panels open up new dimensions for innovative HMI design. There are numerous gestures that might be used in an application:

Zooming in and out and rotating objects with two fingers, scrolling lists (panning) and switching to the next screen with a quick swipe (flick). The main advantage of multi-touch technology is how it makes operation more intuitive. It also provides an effective method of preventing operating errors, simply by requiring two-hand gestures for critical or potentially dangerous operations.

Multi-touch panels
Multi-touch panels open up new dimensions for innovative HMI design. The main benefit of multi-touch technology is a considerably more intuitive user experience.For example, zoom functionality can allow technicians performing commissioning or service to quickly check out a detail of a CAD drawing. At the same time, requiring two-hand gestures for certain tasks can help prevent operating errors. A wellstructured multi-touch HMI improves ergonomics by reducing the number of operating layers compared to a standard touch screen.

The Automation PC 910 provides an impressive array of extra features. New Smart Display Link 3 (SDL3) technology offers clear advantages for constructing modular machines and systems. The third generation represents a new chapter in the success story of this digital display transfer technology. Smart Display Link's unsurpassed convenience is owed to two key advantages: it is completely independent of what operating system is used and connects the PC to the panel using only a single cable. What's new about SDL3 is its ability to span much greater distances. This allows for optimal placement of Automation PCs and operator panels even on more expansive systems. A second highlight of SDL3 is its use of standard Ethernet cables, which drastically reduces cable costs over longer distances. The thin cable and small RJ45 plug are a perfect fit in tight situations such as feedthroughs and support arm systems. Previously, these solutions required a thin client with a complete PC design.

This not only took up a considerable amount of space and was dependent on the software and operating system being used, it also added to the cost of the PC architecture.The modular design of the Automation PC 910 and Automation Panel allows them to be equipped with an optional SDL3 port.

Cool Design

Fan-free operation to the highest standards
Many variants of the Automation PC 910 provide the option of fan-free operation. When this feature is combined with CFast cards and solid state drives, the PC system is completely free of rotating parts – a huge advantage when it comes to operating maintenance-free. The Automation PC 910 cooling system has been completely revamped for optimal heat transfer out of the housing. To maximize convection for fanfree operation, the Automation PC 910 heat sink design was optimized through an extensive evaluation process using simulation models. On high-end systems with fans, an air current is directed through the integrated cooling fins. As processors shrink in size, heat is generated on a smaller and smaller surface area. To deal with this, heat pipes are the best way to provide maximum heat dissipation.
Optimized air circulation
The new honeycomb openings on the housing panels provide the perfect combination of air circulation and structural rigidity.

Celeron® processors and select Core™ i-series processors are able to operate fan-free. Yet, even fan-free, the Automation PC 910 is able to achieve performance results that previous PC generations could only reach with fans. In the high-end range, quad-core CPUs can be used with fan cooling to achieve performance values that not too long ago would have been inconceivable for such a compact form factor.

Maximum reliability

Automation PCs are designed and built for continuous operation in harsh industrial environments over the course of many years. They are encased in a robust welded housing that shields the electronics from the external environment and easily endures even the roughest handling. A heavy-duty industrial coating protects the housing against aggressive conditions and keeps the Automation PC 910 looking new – even after years of use. The circuit boards are connected using screw-in plugs, and the elimination of all internal connection cables further strengthens resistance to vibration and shock.The Automation PC 910 was developed with a special focus on providing fan-free operation over a broad range of performance levels. Replacing hard disks with solid state drives results in a PC with no rotating parts at all. Maintenance tasks, such as regularly changing out fan filters, are completely eliminated. All components have been selected with maximum reliability in mind. These components have been designed specifically for use in industrial environments, can withstand high ambient temperatures and have guaranteed long-term availability.
